A South Australian man caught a record-breaking fish during a solo fishing trip.
Kasey Parkinson was officially recognized by the Australian National Sportfishing Association (ANSA) last month after catching a giant Murray cod measuring about 4.4 feet long. Parkinson told PEOPLE in a statement that he landed the fish using Abu Garcia rods and reels, as well as the Bassman SiliJig. Abu Garcia is part of the Pure Fishing team.
“I was doing some fishing solo along the Murray River and had been doing really good the last few days, so I got up early and snuck out before the sun popped up the following morning,” Parkinson told Yahoo News Australia. “I already had a good fish at this stage at sunrise, and then around 9 a.m., it all unfolded.”
After the giant fish latched onto his Bassman SiliJig lure, Parkinson said it “almost ripped the rod” straight out of his hands.
“I didn’t think it was the size it was until it was boatside,” he recalled. “Once it was in the net, which it only just fit in, I was over the bloody moon.”
“After a quick measure and some photos, it went a whopping 1370mm, but during the photos it slipped on the mat,” he added. “Therefore, I got the record at 1355mm, which I’m over the moon about as my personal best before this was around 1300mm.”

The fish broke the state and national length records.
While recounting the moment during a conversation with Sunrise on 7, Parkinson admitted that he was “already on the beers” after catching his first fish of the day, which was also quite large.
“I just went around the corner, and I bumped into this one,” he said. “Looking back on the video, it actually — I was like, ‘Well, that was pretty easy.’ ”
“When I went to lift it up for a photo, that was a different story,” he quipped, adding that the giant fish began thrashing wildly in his arms.
“There was a few nervous moments when I was going to net it at the back of the boat because obviously a fish of that size, by yourself, it was pretty hard,” the angler said.
After catching the fish that earned him a “pretty cool achievement” and taking a few photos with it, Parkinson put the cod back in the water and watched it swim away, he told Yahoo News Australia.
“Still can’t believe how big this fish actually was,” he later wrote on Facebook. “It absolutely smashed my PB, and hooking a fish of this size solo was something I’ll never forget.”
