Katrina Marcinowski / Netflix // Netflix Two characters tied things up, or at least tied something, on the season 3 finale of Nobody Wants This . Everyone and everything else on the Netflix series is open-ended. While we wait to hear if the Kristen Bell and Adam Brody rom-com has been renewed for a season 4, let’s break down how things ended in season 3.
For the most part, Joanne and Noah did “normal” couple things like move in together, get engaged, convert religions, and plan a wedding this season. Noah’s rabbinical career took off, and Joanne’s podcasting career took a tumble. Their newly single siblings, on the other hand, were on a different path. Did Sasha and Morgan’s path lead them to each other, finally? It did, but their happily ever after still seems pretty far away. And we can’t forget Esther.
Unfortunately, yes, and not in a great way. Lynn did something I would like to call brag blabbed it to the other parents and Esther. You know when someone spills a secret and clearly just wanted to boast about being in the loop? Sasha and Morgan were kind of in a weird place. After hooking up in New York, they each rejected each other and regretted it on separate occasions. Joanne had to use her sister’s “Make Them” method to get Morgan to be in a room with Sasha. Then a car game about vegetables proved that they had a special connection... a lot is happening! But the big family fight put a damper on them again. Sasha also dropped her on the ground, and he is very tall. Red flag!
Of course, what does Esther do the second she finds out that her ex-ish husband slept with the woman he promised he didn’t have feelings for over and over? Tell Morgan and their whole families that she and Sasha had sex the day before. (She still has that rich boyfriend, too. Messy!) She’s mad at Sasha and Joanne for not telling her sooner.
Because of all this drama, the Roklov family is basically back to hating the Williams family. With some notable exceptions, of course.
Yes! She completed her conversion class, celebrated her “Best Last Christmas Ever,” and had a mikveh ceremony on the beach with Sarah Silverman’s Rabbi Eden. We didn’t learn her Hebrew name, but she is officially Jewish now.
Not only does Joanne officially convert to Judaism at the beach, but Noah asks Rabbi Eden if she’ll marry them real quick instead of the backyard wedding they had planned. Their family is there, but back up at the beach house and full of tension. The vibes are so bad up there, and so not about Joanne, that it makes sense Noah would want to recenter their love. They scrounge up some rings, ask a Jewish man walking his dog to be their witness, and get it done!
This type of thing happens so often on television. A show will spend a whole story arc doing wedding planning plots, and then at the last minute the couple elopes because it’s more romantic that way. Rapid fire examples include: The Office , Sex and the City , Grey’s Anatomy , and now Nobody Wants This . The cynical part of me wonders if production didn’t want to spend money on a fake wedding. Or maybe the writers wish they’d just gotten eloped instead of going through wedding stress, and are living vicariously through their characters.
Their dramatic families are definitely going to be livid about Joanne and Noah’s decision to get married without them. They’re pretty much prepared to melt down about every minor inconvenience. But like... surely they can turn the wedding they planned into a reception, right? You don’t need that much of an excuse to throw a big party. Maybe it will actually bring them all together. Not the wedding, mind you. That would be too easy. Knowing these characters, if Nobody Wants This gets a season 4, what’s going to bring them together is having the newly wed Noah and Joanne as a common enemy.
The storyline about Morgan’s success kind of usurping Joanne’s entire career got put on the back burner in season 3. For kind of that reason alone, I need this show to get renewed for a season 4. It seems like Joanne could very easily wake up one morning, discover that “the Rabbi’s wife” has become her entire personality, and not be too pleased about that. Not in a way that would ruin their marriage, but in a way that could lead her to find herself and her purpose outside of her relationship in fun and entertaining ways. Right? Uhh, please?
