Prince William’s destiny has long been planned out for him—he was born to be king, a role he is first in line for at present.
If that weren’t his path in life, though, the Prince of Wales shared on the October 23 episode of The Graham Norton Show that he’d either like to be a policeman or a DJ.
He admitted of being a DJ that he “wasn’t very good” at it.
Prince William made history this week, becoming the first member of the royal family to appear on the popular Graham Norton Show—where he revealed the two jobs he’d like to have if he wasn’t born to be king.
The Prince of Wales taped the episode on October 22, set to air on October 23. The future king was there to talk about his Earthshot Prize, which takes its annual awards ceremony to Mumbai, India next month. He was joined on the stage by Earthshot Prize supporters Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham, and Robert Irwin, all of whom have been champions for Earthshot over the years.
As for what jobs he’d like to do were he not born royal, two came to mind: a police officer and a DJ, though William admitted of the latter that he “wasn’t very good” at it.

“I did want to be a policeman when I was younger,” he said (per The Daily Mail). “I thought I could make a good one. And then I went through a phase of wanting to be a DJ—I wasn’t very good.”
He shared that when he relaxes, he does so by listening to music and watching movies. “I love getting immersed in deep-thinking films,” the prince said from the show’s iconic red sofa. “I like action films, too, but I like something a bit different. I’m a big fan of everything Christopher Nolan does. His films are fantastic—The Dark Knight series is psychologically dark and deep, and I absolutely love that. He takes concepts that are completely out there and makes them incredibly entertaining.”
As for two of his children, William mentioned that Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are into The Celebrity Traitors. “I love it, the family love it,” he said. “Charlotte and Louis are obsessed with it. It’s really good telly.”

When asked about how the Earthshot Prize came to be, William explained, “For many years I was hearing stories about environment issues, and one thing that struck me was the negativity and doom, which got me down.”
“I thought we could do something more powerful and more optimistic, and the idea of an awards ceremony came about, and we could talk about urgency and optimism together,” he continued. “It’s about getting excited. There are some amazing people out there doing things to protect the world. We could really highlight what is being done and scale them to the next level to have more impact around the world.”

As he prepares to head to Mumbai, buzz is circulating that he might be joined by his wife, Kate Middleton, for the sixth iteration of the awards ceremony. She attended the first and second ceremonies in London and Boston, respectively, but hasn’t joined William for the annual event since 2022, amid her cancer diagnosis and recovery. She announced in January 2025 that she is in remission.
