Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are still waiting to bring their newly adopted dog home.
The couple revealed exclusively to PEOPLE that their new rescue pup — whose name may or may not be Javi — is undergoing treatment for a parasite, delaying his arrival at their New York City home.
“We don’t have him yet because he had a little bit of health issue,.” Ripa, 56, told PEOPLE on Sunday, Oct. 18, while attending the Broadway opening night of Other Desert Cities at the Hudson Theatre.
“A parasite,” Consuelos, 55, interjected. “So they’re treating it and then he’s going to come.”
Still, Consuelos said they expect their new addition to join the family soon — including Lena, their Maltese/Shih Tzu mix, whom they adopted in 2020.
“Any day now,” he added.

The health update comes less than a week after the Live with Kelly and Mark hosts announced they had adopted the pup, who was brought to their show as part of its Adopt a Dog Week by the rescue organization Pet ResQ Inc.
Consuelos immediately fell in love with the dog, originally named Lucas, when he carried him onto the set during the Monday, Oct. 12 episode. The pup settled comfortably into his arms and even fell asleep as the couple continued their host chat.
By the following morning, the pair had made the adoption official. “We have news: We adopted Javi yesterday,” Consuelos announced on Tuesday’s show.
“We have a new baby,” Ripa added, revealing that the dog wouldn’t be coming home immediately because they were waiting for him to undergo medical tests.
The couple also introduced Javi to Lena. Although Lena was initially apprehensive, Ripa said the dogs eventually played next to each other and expressed hope that they would become friends with gradual introductions.
There is, however, one other detail Ripa and Consuelos have yet to settle: their new dog’s name.

Initially, Consuelos suggested calling him Javi (short for Javier, because he suspects the pup may be part Havanese). But Ripa revealed on Wednesday’s show that they were still debating whether to keep his original name, Lucas. Even their three adult children — Michael, Lola and Joaquin — had gotten involved in the discussion, offering suggestions of their own.
“Our children are adults. They do not live with us,” Ripa said. “I was like, ‘Stay out of it, you don’t live here!’ ”
“They have no vote,” Consuelos added.
The duo eventually turned to their studio audience, asking them to choose between Lucas and Javi. Javi won by a landslide, though as of Monday, Oct. 19, the hosts have officially not settled on a name.

The adoption marks an emotional new chapter for Ripa and Consuelos, who lost their beloved dog Chewie in February 2025 at age 17.
Ripa previously shared that she believed Chewie may have played a role in bringing their new companion into their lives. “I bet Chewie sent Javi here for us,” she recalled thinking after seeing the pup, who reminded her of their late Shih Tzu.
For now, the couple is eagerly awaiting the day they can finally welcome him home.
“We are like expectant parents,” she said Tuesday. “I started nesting last night. I couldn’t sleep.”
“It’s exciting,” Consuelos agreed.
“We’re very excited,” Ripa added.
