A school bus carrying members of the Salem High School (Conyers, GA) football program overturned Friday night, Oct. 23, in Conyers, Georgia, sending 25 people to area hospitals as authorities investigate the crash.

The Rockdale County school bus was traveling along Salem Road near State Route 138 and Interstate 20 when it overturned while returning from an away football game.

The bus was carrying 27 people, including 17 student-athletes, seven trainers, two coaches and the driver, the Rockdale County School District confirmed to FOX 5 Atlanta.

Twenty-two students and three staff members were transported to medical facilities for treatment and evaluation. One trainer was airlifted to a trauma center, and Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital went on standby for a possible mass-casualty event following the crash.

The bus came to rest on its side against a construction barrier. Images from the scene showed significant damage to the front of the vehicle and a shattered windshield.

Salem head football coach Fredrick Green survived the crash and was working to locate the team members who had been transported to different hospitals.

School and district personnel also went to area hospitals to assist families and check on the well-being of students and staff.

Authorities have not determined what caused the bus to leave the roadway and overturn. Investigators also have not confirmed whether another vehicle was involved.

No fatalities were reported in the crash.
